FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law, gives parents and legal guardians control of their children’s educational records (grades, transcripts, etc.) and transfers that control to students when they turn 18 or go to college. Because of FERPA, parents do not get access to their college student’s grades.
There are a few ways to handle this. A good place to start is by talking to your student (early in the school year if possible) about their academic goals and how much information you’d like to receive about their grades. Would you like your student to tell you their grades? Do you want to actually see the grades? If so, the school may have a consent form that your student can fill out giving you access to this information.
Learn more about grades and student privacy at www2.ed.gov/ferpa and by contacting your student’s college or university.
