Is Your Student Getting the Results They Want This Semester?

If not, now is the time to help them think about small things they can do differently to make the rest of the semester a success.

Ideas you can suggest to your student:

  • Visit TA or Professor Office Hours

    • Encourage your student to reach out to their TAs or professors during office hours. It’s a valuable opportunity to ask questions, clarify misunderstandings, and get tailored feedback on assignments or exams. Building a relationship with professors can also make it easier to reach out for help later in the semester.
  •  Reflect on Exam Performance So Far

    • Taking a few minutes to evaluate recent exams can provide valuable insights. What went well, and what could they improve on? Perhaps they need to start studying earlier, adjust their study techniques, or make use of resources like study guides. Reflecting now can lead to a more strategic approach to upcoming tests.
  • Look for Extra Credit Opportunities

    • Extra credit can sometimes make a meaningful difference in final grades. Remind your student to check with professors about any available extra credit work. Taking advantage of these opportunities early can reduce stress later on, and it’s a good backup in case they encounter any challenges with future assignments.
  •  Re-read All Course Syllabi

    • Mid-semester is the perfect time for a syllabus review. By re-reading syllabi, your student can refresh their memory on course expectations, grading policies, and any upcoming deadlines. It’s also a great way to double-check for any required activities they may have overlooked, like papers or projects due soon.
  • Complete Any Required Observation Hours

    • Some courses, like Intro to Psychology at larger universities, require students to complete observation or participation hours as part of the grade. These tasks can fill up quickly towards the end of the semester, so it’s wise to get them done now to avoid scrambling at the last minute.
  • Get Ahead on Assignments and Projects

    • Encourage your student to identify any assignments or projects they can complete now. Tackling these early can help them manage their workload and feel more prepared as finals approach, reducing the stress that typically builds up at the end of the semester.
  • Utilize Free Tutoring and Study Sessions

    • Many campuses offer free tutoring or study sessions. These resources can be invaluable for challenging courses and often offer insights into how professors structure exams. Even a few tutoring sessions can boost understanding and confidence.
  • Make an Effort to Attend All Classes

    • Sometimes the simplest changes can be the most effective. Attending every class not only ensures that your student stays on top of new material but also allows them to engage with instructors and classmates, who can be helpful study partners. Remind them that attendance often correlates with better academic outcomes.

One Small Change Can Have a Big Outcome

Often, all it takes is one mindful adjustment to make a positive impact. Encourage your student to select even just one of these strategies and stick with it. That small step might be the key to making the rest of their semester a success!

College Success Plan programs encourage students to become more independent and refine their life skills. Planning ahead, communicating with professors, taking on leadership roles, and engaging in extracurricular activities all lead to a gratifying and balanced college experience.

Students look forward to weekly virtual sessions that help them stay on track and in control. Better grades, increased autonomy, lessened stress, and an overall sense of well-being are just a few of the ways we are ensuring the success of our students.
