A Simple Checklist for Staying on Track

One of the biggest differences between high school and college is that no one is managing your time for you. Professors expect students to keep track of assignments, deadlines, readings, and exams independently. The good news? A few simple habits can make a huge difference.

Get Organized

  • Read every syllabus during the first week
  • Add exam dates, assignment deadlines, and important events to your calendar
  • Choose one planning system and use it consistently (paper planner, phone calendar, or app)
  • Check your schedule every morning

Plan Ahead

  • Break large assignments into smaller tasks
  • Start projects at least one week before they’re due
  • Schedule study time before you need it
  • Review upcoming deadlines every Sunday evening

Create Study Habits

  • Find a study space with minimal distractions
  • Study between classes instead of waiting until the night before
  • Schedule short breaks to stay focused
  • Form a study group or find an accountability partner
  • Review upcoming deadlines every Sunday evening

Avoid Common Pitfalls

  • Don’t assume you’ll remember important dates
  • Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed to ask for help
  • Don’t let social media steal your study time
  • Don’t confuse being busy with being productive

Weekly Success Habits

  • Attend every class
  • Review notes within 24 hours
  • Visit office hours when you have questions
  • Complete readings before class whenever possible
  • Set goals for the upcoming week

REMEMBER

Time management isn’t about filling every hour of the day. It’s about making intentional choices with your time so you can succeed academically, stay involved on campus, and still enjoy the college experience. Small habits practiced consistently often make a bigger difference than last-minute cramming.
